Research Questions ②

I am going to continue answering my research questions.
I hope these answers would affect people to stand up for animal rights!!

・How many animals get killed in shelters in the US and other countries??

It is estimated that of the 600,000 to 800,000 animals that get taken in the shelters, about 40 percent of them are killed. These of course include pets that are young and very much healthy.

In the UK, 90,000 to 130,000 dogs and 130,000 to 160,000 cats are taken in to the shelters. In this, about 10 percent of dogs and 13 percent of cats are murdered.
It may not seem as thought the percentage are not high as Japan, however when you calculate the number, it is hurtful.

・How do animal get killed in shelters??

Animal shelters euthanize dogs and cats and other animals.
The main methods are pharmacological and physical. To explain, pharmacological methods are methods using injected drugs and gases. The gasses shut down the nervous system.
The physical methods must first cause a rapid loss of consciousness by disrupting the central nervous system.
There are shooting using special guns, injections and so on.
There are certain methods that were too hurtful for me to write here, however I will paste the link so please check it out!!

・ What is the process of animal testing??

Researchers submits a scientific project proposal to an agency.
                         ↓
If the project was evaluated good, the researcher submits a proposal to the institution to do an animal research.
                         ↓
The universities animal care committee reviews if it is okay to apply that test on animal, or give restrictions.
                         ↓
Mandatory training on animals and health precautions are assured for animals.
                        ↓
The institution approves the project for one year and the tests begins.

What I thought was strange is that institutions say they review or restricts animal testing, the number of animal death regarding animal testing hasn't declined.

  1. This is an excellent observation that you make:

"What I thought was strange is that institutions say they review or restricts animal testing, the number of animal death regarding animal testing hasn't declined."

I'm also curious about this. It could mean that they go through the motions of restricting and reviewing animal experiments, but they may actually be giving most of them a "rubber stamp."
    Cheers,
