How many pets are abandoned each year?

To answer this question, I looked up the webpage of Environment Ministry of Japan. They make statistics of abandoned pets each year, and I found the statistic of 2015 and here are the datas.

・The number of dogs abandoned by their owners is 6,462.
・The number of cats abandoned by their owners is 14,061.

・The number of unclaimed dogs is 40,187.
・The number of unclaimed cats is 116,201.

To sum up, the total number is 176,911 in one year.

This number will surprise you, but it's decreasing steadily every year.
In 2004, the number was 418,413. On average, the number decreases 25,608 every year since 2004.

(Since Environment Ministry is undoubtedly a reliable source, and most of the websites which came up when I searched this question cite from Environment Ministry, I only cited this website.)

How many pets that left in Tohoku after the disaster are still there?

Environment Ministry also reports the situation of Tohoku after the disaster, and according to their report, as of a year after the disaster, more than 5,389 homeless, unclaimed or injured dogs and cats were found and sheltered. I said "more than" because the precise number is unknown, since some prefectures like Tochigi and Chiba didn't conduct animal rescue activities, and it's almost impossible to know the exact number of cats.
6 years have past since the day, and it's also difficult to know what happened to the pets that were sheltered because most of the organizations and groups finished their activities and also to homeless pets or those left in disaster areas.
I found one article of a freelance photographer, who is fond of cats and voluntarily went to disaster areas to feed victim pets almost every week for 3 years. What he had seen for 3 years were chained dogs died by starvation, domestic animals penned and starved and wild animals such as japanese raccoons, foxes, boars, coons stealing foods which volunteers put for starved homeless pets.
Human life-first is important, but before people have pets, they should assume situations when disasters happen, and then ponder whether they can take responsibility to have lives in their hands.

What is dogfighting?
What happens to dogs that lose fights?

It's not really a common word I think, but many people will be surprised to know this is real.
Dogfighting is a blood sport which associated with underground organized crime. Dogs are trained to fight and pitted against each other, and the fights last until one is declared as a winner. At the time of declaration, the loser is often incapable of scratch, dead or jumps out of the pit. And if he isn't killed in the fight, he'll be killed by his owner with a gun, beatings or torture. The trained dogs are often called "pit bulls".  They are penned or chained until the fights.
Dogfighting is banned in all 50 states in US, and in 5 prefectures including Tokyo in Japan, it continues to occur.
